What represent the art of marquetry?

Mosaic in the word means to patch, piece and vein. Any work that includes streaks is announced mosaic. The mosaic beautifully puts small pieces of wood, metal, fabric, tiles, etc. next to each other.

Marquetry designs achieved their peak during the Seljuk period. The works that remain from the sixth century adequately show the exquisiteness of this art in the Seljuk period.

The art of marquetry is broad in the cities of Isfahan, Tabriz, Yazd, Kashan, etc. Examples of marquetry designs can be found in historic buildings. Wood mosaic is used in handicrafts in many cities of the country like Isfahan.

From the very beginning, wood mosaics were used for decorative goals. Marquetry furniture is one of the most popular species. Marquetry is used to decorate the surface of tables, sideboards, bookshelves, and wooden accessories.

Customarily, the art of marquetry is the art of arrangements next to each other, and these pieces must be placed on a surface. The surface on which the pieces are placed is called the background.

This art is typically distributed into two types of wool and polyester. What can increase the value of marquetry is the pieces of wood used in it, which should be 2 to 3 mm thick and sufficient wood should be used without cracking or decay.

As mentioned above, marquetry furniture has many fans. Artists create elegant works with their own hands and use tools for interior decoration.

The apartment lobby is one of the most widely used places for mosaic art in residential buildings, which additionally maintains an extremely beautiful visual effect.

What is woodcarving?

Woodcarving is one of the most delicate handicrafts. Artists create works with cheap raw materials that embody a great value.

In this art, patterns are prominently placed on the work surface. Woodcarving is one of the branches of carving, but carving is chiefly done in the form of woodcarving.

One of the critical elements in woodcarving is embossing. The protrusions of the objects in the woodcarving will be visible on the embossed wood.

This modern Iranian art has always been considered from the past to the present and has been employed in many volumetric and decorative works.

Throughout history, because of the elevated availability of wood and its cheapness, wood has been used in various ways, so it is not possible to estimate the ancientness of woodcarving.

One of the oldest inlaid works in the world is a wooden statue discovered in Egypt dating back to 2500 BC. Not unexpectedly, the 11,000-year-old wooden sculpture of the Shigir idol can be considered the oldest carving on wood.

Several woods are used in woodcarving. The artists of this art decide on the type of wood according to the color and structure they want to create. Walnut, pear, sycamore, elm, beech, Tabrizi, etc. are among those types of wood.

Each of these woods has a particular color which carries a special beauty in generating unique works.

Carving styles with different construction methods are divided into three categories. These three types of engraving are embossing and sculpting.

Carving, like the art of marquetry, requires different tools. Among These tools we can refer to the cave, clamp, inlay

table, carpentry clamp, iron file, paper, and cloth and blue file, stationery, oiled or leather or calc paper, plastic or wooden hammer, electric sharpener, wood types, wood glue, Brush, nail, wardrobe, saw, scraper, drill, meter, oil stone, rubber, underlayment, oil, etc.

Of all these tools, the cave is the most important. This tool is used in digging and turning. In general, four types of caves are used in woodcarving, which is: flat cave, semi-open cave, galoyi cave and Shafra cave

Differences between woodcarving and marquetry

According to the descriptions suggested previously, it is obvious that these two arts contain similarities and differences.

In the basic perception, woodcarving means excavating, while the art of marquetry represents a type of arrangement that places small pieces of wood next to each other.

In woodcarving, sharp and tough equipment prepared in extraordinary shapes is used as well as possible in the hands of the artist of the labor industry.

Wood mosaic is a type of painting that is drawn on wood and a saw blade is used instead of brush and paint.

The point that can be detected in the woodcarving is the use of tools, compactness, and

implementation of the work. Marquetry finds meaning in various forms with pieces of wood, and woodcarving comes real by making and producing volume to the wood.

Tools used both in  the art of marquetry, and woodcarving includes U-shaped saw bows, shadow nails, nail clippers, pliers, razors, and sharp tools.

In the end, it should be mentioned that original and modern arts such as woodcarving and marquetry achieve the peak of beauty jointly.

These arts may be marginalized these days, but they even so have their special fans and retain their originality.
